Transition Year

The Transition Year programme is an integral part of our secondary school.

We see this programme as an opportunity for our students to build on the academic achievements and the character development attained in Junior Cycle in order to prepare them for the Leaving Certificate and for their future role in society.

The Transition Year Programme benefits from continuous reviewing and updating.

Rosemont’s Coaching system continues in TY, supporting your daughter in maximising her potential through Rosemont’s Core Programme and Powerful Opportunities.

We encourage every girl to ‘personalise’ her TY, to jump in and start to discover new interests, skills, talents and passions!

Sampling 5th years Subjects

All TY Students take part in ‘Sampling 5th years Subjects’.

TY sampling will run for two weeks:    Monday 8th January until Friday 19th January

For these dates, TY classes are taught as if the girls were already studying 5th year syllabus.  Students can attend sample classes in any optional subject they choose.

Teachers select a short topic/unit that allows a meaningful insight into the subject at Leaving Certificate level.   Teachers give an overview of the subject syllabus, forms of assessment etc. to their students.  This facilitates the girls being well informed before they indicate their preferred subject choices for Leaving Certificate.

Careers – mock interviews; guest speakers; career research.

Our TY students are enrolled in the REACH+ programme on Careersportal.ie.  The Reach+ Career and College Preparation Programme is a blended Career Guidance Programme for Senior Cycle Students from TY to 6th Year. The programme encourages independent research and can help support your daughter in making informed career decisions through understanding themselves, the world of education, and the world of work. They will create a Career Portfolio which will contain all their career and course research and this can be assessed anytime from any wi-fi enabled device.  This programme is followed through a weekly Career Guidance class.

The Guidance Counsellor works closely with class groups and each girl individually to plan towards both their Leaving Certificate and their future studies toward a career.  Guest speakers, frequently past students of Rosemont, are invited to share their experiences of the studies and work related to their careers. This provides an excellent opportunity for our students to ask questions and gain a deeper understanding of possible careers.

Assessment:

TY students complete formal assessments in October, December, House Exams, and Summer Exams and parents receive written reports.  Assessments and reporting can be based on written exams, research, presentations, projects, performances, etc., and may be based on individual or group work. This approach develops the girls’ skills in the range of assessments used at 3rd level as well as towards the Leaving Certificate.
